A tweet showed up in my Twitter feed one day about a really “Goode” job. The title of the job is “Murphy-Goode Wine Country Lifestyle Correspondent”. A dream job for any social media butterfly that loves wine…wait that’s me!
The job duties and details (taken from the Murphy-Goode site) are:
- Exploring the vineyards of Murphy-Goode and surrounding areas and discovering what the Sonoma County Wine Country has to offer, from well-known destinations to off-the-beaten-path spots.
- Tasting hundreds of wines and meeting the locals in our tasting room.
- Increasing your wine wisdom: while studying isn’t required, our winemaking and vineyard experts will take the time to show you how it’s all done.
- Working with our winemaker, David Ready, Jr., to create a new wine commemorating your job with us.
- Filing reports on your experiences, via weekly blogs, photo diaries, Twitter, Facebook, video updates and ongoing media interviews.
- They set you up in a house in downtown Healdsburg (close to their tasting room) and pay you 10k a month for the 6 month gig.
The application process is pretty simple, just fill out an online application form and submit a 60 sec video telling Murphy-Goode why you are the perfect person for the job. Please take the time to vote for me. Click here to vote.
Many companies make the mistake of choosing to get on the “social media marketing” band wagon and before they have a solid business strategy or just shy away from it in fear. (read more about Three reasons companies fear social media – and why they shouldn’t | ZDNet.com)
Once I heard about this job opening I scoured the Murphy-Goode website (also made a visit to Healdsburg and the MG tasting room) to get a feel of their brand. I wanted to get an understanding why they choose to go this route with their marketing and see how they are positioning their brand. Bottom line, would my brand (personality) be a fit with their product. What I found out is that the Murphy-Goode product is one of quality and over the years has maintain a good consistent reputation. The owners stand by their
values of community, friendship and fun. Like they say on the website “We like to say that our wines are laidback and unpretentious, just like our winemaker, David Ready, Jr.” (who’s voice, I swear, sounds just like actor Bill Paxton).
It is not apparent exactly what type of person they are looking as they have left the qualification requirements open a bit. What I can tell, from the website and various David Ready, Jr interviews, they want someone not only with a great energetic personality, sense of humor, an explorer, but does not necessarily need to know ALL about wine. Part of the journey of this job is to learn about the winemaking process and explore the surrounding area and share it via various social media platforms. This is a brilliant way to campaign for the job allowing people complete freedom of interpretation of what they think the job could be.
Murphy-Goode has already started establishing them self in the social media space on Twitter and Facebook. Their tone is a good match to thier brand and no matter the outcome of my application, their are on their way of building a strong and thriving social media commuity. Cheers to Murphy-Goode!
